Short synopsis:
Girl returns home after long hiatus only to find out her mother has passed away from cancer. Unable to accept it, she eventually discovers that her mom agreed to be part of a medical research project and she suspects that her mom never actually died, but is still receiving experimental treatment.
Upon breaking into a medical facility, the girl finds her mom in an ‘awake coma’ state, doesn’t react to her or seem to be able to respond in any way. When she tries to move her mom, the mom becomes physically violent. The girl, with mild injuries, runs out upset and distraught back to her dorm room, where she becomes terribly ill. When others try to help her, the girl attacks her and so begins the outbreak stage.
In this universe, the characters are aware of the zombie pop culture-movies, tv, etc. When it is reported that there are bio-related outbreaks, it becomes sensationalized that it is, in fact, the beginning of a zombie-type epidemic. FEMA, first responders, and medical personnel stop reporting to duty. While there is panic and chaos, there are groups that are very excited to be part of an impending apacolyse and go out in search of being part of it, blurring the lines between the reality of what is actually going on versus the reality that people are making it out to be.
An underlying theme would be the concept of ‘brain-death’.
